s owner al davis has died. they are not saying when or how he died. we'll bring you those details as they become available but this morning, a football legend is being remembered. larry beil has more. >> in the off-season that burns brightest is the will to win excellence and pride and poise and just win baby. >> from john madden all the way to hue jackson whether they were winning or losing year after year, al davis believed in the greatness of the raiders at the very end. >> we'll get it straightened out. you'll be proud to win that silver and black. >> al davis for the oakland raiders, he altered every aspect of pro football strategically with a vertical passing game.

socially giving minorities a chance at the n.f.l.. he was the raiders. >> just win baby. >> he was born on july 4th, 1929 raised in brooklyn and graduated from syracuse where he was cut from the varsity football team. he had a stint at the usc. he begin with the los angeles chargers. in 1963 at age 33 he became head coach and general manager of the oakland raiders. he took a losing team and quickly turned it around. in 1966 he was named as commissioner and made the historic merger with the n.f.l. with davis in control as the managing general partner they won 13 championships and three superbowls from zv 7 to 1985. those were the glory years. between greats like kenny

stabler and marcus allen, it was the team of the decade. >> aide dream some day i would build the finest organization in professional sports. >> he was an innovator. he hired tom flores and also art shell, the first african-american coach. >> it's evolution of equity and fairness. >> in 1969 he took a chance on a linebacker's coach naming john madden head coach. he took a chance on an elder player george blan da that continued to play in the late 40s. there was bo jackson excelled in two sports. davis left a legacy in the

courtroom. he moved the team to los angeles. in 1995 he moved the team back to oakland. that brought about multiple lawsuits involving l.a. oakland and the n.f.l. davis also was involved with suits against the city of oakland over the sale of raider tickets and seat licenses. after years of switching coaches and three straight losing seasons, he took a back to the future approach, re-hiring art shell as head coach the same coach he fired 12 years earlier. >> the raiders and most trusted name in sports. >> but rather than trusted rairdz was the dysfunctional name in pro sports. shell lasted one season. on january 23 2007 he shocked the critics yet again when he named 31-year-old lane tif 'fan

as head coach. >> you don't have to be old to be great. >> i will bring an explosive powerful oh fence to this franchise. we will utilize our skilled players. >> that never happened. >> randy moss they failed to deliver. after posting five wins in 20 games. he fired him in 2008. what followed was a contentious war of words. >> the lines had been going on for weeks and months and a year and time a number of lies. >> the number of lies was hurtful. >> al davis ruled the raiders through the best of times and worst of times. love him or hate him he was an icon truly one of a kind. that was larry beil remembering go al davis who died at the age of 82.

we'll have more at life and death of al davis on "abc 7 news" at 4:00. >> a pilot is safe after ditching his plane in the ocean. he left on a trip that didn't seem to match the fuel range of his plane. >> here is coastguard video of the incredible landing. >> it was textbook landing if there is such a thing in the water. he just touched down. >> we were overjoyed. the airplane was intact. >> he was flying in t-310 twin cessna. he radioed the faa that notified the hilo coastguard to tell the pilot was low on fuel and would soon run out.

knocking the gun out of his hand but nobody was hurt. >> i heard one or two three seconds that, i heard three successively. >> what we have determined since then, he was attacked by one of the suspects as they engaged in the struggle over the pistol. it discharged several times. we don't know if it was the officer or citizen pulling the trigger. >> two officers arrived and fired at the suspect but missed. evans was taken into custody and is in the hospital with numerous broken bones. now to a chilling story of how one man survived this week's shooting rampage in cupertino. they believe shareef allman targeted perceived enemies at work. one describes how he played dead

in order to survive. >> it was quick, it wasn't bambam. >> they just froze as shareef shot them one at a time from one end of the table. >> he started from one end of the table and started shooting down. i was the last one and i was watching. i don't know when i got shot. i had to be facing him. he was shot in the upper right arm. he put his over his head and played dead and fell to the floor. he believes that move saved his life. >> he actually walked over to the end of the table and closed my eyes iawd kept praying inside i saw him walk over and close his eyes. next thing i heard was him

running out. >> he was unable to call for help telling 911 dispatchers what happened. he seemed to pick his targeted as each one as he shot them. they attend a private meeting. they are being offered grief counseling to deal with the situation. as they left employees declined to speak to us. >> mike ambrosio calls his survival the beginning of a second life. the bullet missed bone and not suffered any loss of feeling or movement. friends and family came together last night to remember three people shot and killed after a party in san leandro. they gathered in the parking lot where two gunmen opened fire on a group of people killing three last weekend. they say an illegal early morning tattoo party erupted in

gunfire. they believe party goers know who the shooters are and won't identify them. they have released this sketch of a man a person of interest. governor jerry brown has until tomorrow to sign or veto a stack of bills on his desk. yesterday he signed off for californians to register to vote online for the election. leland yee authored the bill. jon he also signed 5 pipeline safety bills in response to the san bruno explosion. pg&e will be required to install shutoff valves. we'll have more on the bills he has signed so far coming up in about 30 minutes. >> apple cofounder steve jobs was laid to rest with a small private funeral yesterday. current ceo says the company is planning a celebration of steve's extraordinary life. he says it will take place soon. he passed away on wednesday at

age 56. they have not released a cause of death but he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and had a liver transplant. he leaves behind four children and his wife. his last project is an anniversary project for her. >> he made a special handmedicine box and love note and talked about how we've had good times hard times but never bad times. the love between them was so beautiful. >> sony pictures has purchased the movie rights of the life of steve jobs. >> a million people are expected to line san francisco bay there afternoon to watch a spectacle in the sky. we'll show you what it's like to be up there with the flying team as they perform over san francisco bay. today is the best klans to give

fleet week kicks into high gear with a parade of ships and blue angels flying over the bay. this is the last practice run yesterday afternoon as the anticipation builds, it seems like everyone in san francisco is getting in the mood. don sanchez has preview of the fleet week activities. >> they are fast serious challenging, this is 2011 version of the blue angels practice run over the bay. fleet watch on the ground from the hills or in a boat we get to check it out.

nice pictures to show you blue whales, a pod have them swimming off the coast of san diego. it's rare to see them so late in the season but warmer weather from the south created an environment reducing the whales in. blue whales are the largest animals ever to live on our planet. hundred feet or more and we have about 200 tons. beautiful water and blue skies.

>> it's going to be an extended period of dry and warmer weather. we do have a couple of changes that may affect the string of sunny days. right now, we are looking at some pesky fog. it has brought down the visibility in napa and also half moon bay but with longer nights it has been cool. in fact in the 40s in the north bay. also we're talking about some upper 40s here around los gatos. 49 in livermore as well as oakland. we will be looking at 11 hours and 31 minutes of daylight. it will be sunny and mild weekend with fog now and again at our coastline. warmest day will arrive on wednesday and thursday with an offshore flow. high pressure in the pacific. it will remain here all week long but we do have an upper-level low well to the north and west of us that will

begin to affect this ridge and weaken it come monday. as it does we'll see increasing clouds. low passes by and high reestablish itself even stronger. that will bring the warmer weather and offshore flow peaking the middle of the week. monday will you notice the clouds but the weekend is looking nice right around normal in san francisco 70s today and in fact about the same tomorrow with that fog. back home, south bay saratoga 76 75 in cupertino. peninsula lots of mid-70s forks palo alto redwood city 70 in millbrae san francisco upper 60s to low 70s. closer you get to the coast we will have the stubborn fog in san mateo but stinson beach low 60s.

destroyed dozens of homes governor brown took steps to make california neighborhoods safer. he signed a number of bills to help prevent such tragedies from happening again including the requirement that all utility companies have an automatic or remote controlled shut off valve. >> at pg&e and other utilities gone ahead and put those valves in san bruno fire would probably not have been as bad of destruction and lives lost. >> reporter: the governor also sided with public employee unions moving all ballot initiatives to november elections only. it's consistent with the constitution they slammed the bill because slated for the elections limits union dues on political activity. now had it will go on november ballot. finally the governor weighed in on the controversial shark fin ban probably most heavily

research. a group of nearly two dozen former university chance slors has proposed a drastic tuition increase. assistant president convened the group and they are suggesting tuition should rise to $24,000 a year for california students out of state tuition would be higher. u.c. spokesmen says the group's ideas are advisory only and not binding. >> the state desperately need the economy can improve. new unemployment numbers for september are not offering much in the way of job creation. the nation added 103,000 jobs. lyanne melendez has more on the jobs outlook. >> september employment numbers were better nearly half of all new jobs came from verizon.

company re-hired 45,000 workers after going on strike. analysts say it still counts as new jobs. >> i guess the best thing can be said about it it wasn't a terrible report. it didn't give any credibility to the argument that we are sliding closer to a recession. robert rice says the slow job has impact on consumer confidence. consumer spending presents 70% of the economy. >> americans cannot buy because they are stressed. they have to save if they have any money at all, at the same time unless they buy businesses are not going to create new jobs. >> the professor says the only save grace is for the government to step in to boost the economy. >> rebuilding roads and bridges and schools and ports and providing people with the safety net they need so they can turned around and in turn buy things so businesses will create jobs. >> right now congress is

battling over president obama's $447 billion job package. many are frustrated with lawmakers and inability to agree on anything. he is one of them. he came down to the financial district to support the occupied wall street movement. he is a graduate of a university. he majored in environmental health and can't find a job in her field. >> i'm entry level. i am a education but it isn't doing me any good because $9 an hour doesn't cut. >> it some are more optimistic and holidays are coming and more hiring will occur. we may see better numbers in the coming months. this morning, president obama is asking americans to tell their senators to support his $3450 billion jobs bill. -- $450 billion jobs bill.

they say the plan will have a significant effect on the economy. >> if we don't account the opposite will be drew. true. there be fewer jobs. so any senator is thinking about voting against this jobs bill needs to explain why they would approach something like that. if republicans have a better plan they should prove it. >> republicans say the president's plan is not serious. hundreds of protestors marched through downtown san francisco last night blocking streets and traffic for more than two hours. protest was organized by the answer coalition to mark the war in afghanistan. several groups educators and students were protesting nund go of the wash. >> i love all my teachers and i'm afraid of that being cut away from my school. >> the coalition wants the money

the anticipation is building for in weekend's fleet festivities. a lot of people are getting in the mood. ♪ ♪ >> navy bands are in town that is pier 39 yesterday afternoon. i want to show you a perspective main attraction blue angels flying over the bay. i was in one of those one time. it is dizzy. this was taken inside the cockpit. here is what it looks and sounds like from below. they have finished with their practice runs. parade of ships kicks off at 11:00 this morning. air show starts at 12:30 today

and tomorrow. >> first question i ask, did you get sick? >> i did not sick. i got dizzy. >> it's going to be a gorgeous day and what do we expect. here we go, golden gate bridge and some fog. you can see how low it is to the deck. that is it will burn off quickly from the sutro camera. layer does look shallow so we will look for full sunshine except for the san mateo coast. you will stay cloudy around half moon bay and pacifica. cool numbers 40s and 50s. nights are longer but overall we are warmer than they were yesterday. sunny skies returning tomorrow for a nice weekend. warm pattern builds next week. we'll have our warmest days wednesday and thursday. upper level trough that will

visit us the end of the weekend. high pressure between now and then remains offshore and that will last for a nice couple of days. it's going to rebuild by the middle of the week that is going to allow for drier conditions. we do have an upper-level low well to the north and west of us. that will provide some slightly cooler weather. coolest day of the week on monday. by tuesday we're talking sunny and warmer with numbers approaching the 80s in some of our inland valleys. statewide, it was a cold front in the northern sierra upper 20s at tahoe. snow pack down to yosemite 69. 76 in fresno. back home gearing in on the south bay, lots of 70s, san francisco will below 70s for very pleasant weekend. numbers could be right around there for that time of the year.

running right around normal. we'll look for mid-70s here from redwood city to menlo park. to 64 in pacifica richmond district 60s there and then in the north bay range will be from the low 60s from bodega bay to mid-70s in clearlake. near east bay a great looking afternoon. light winds it will feel warmer. union city at 72. oakland about the same 72 for you. but you head inland numbers come up a little bit. mid-70s for danville 782346 walnut creek pittsburg and few upper 70s. we saw the sunshine around santa cruz low 70s for you and 74 in hollister. seven-day forecast not much of a change through tomorrow but then extra clouds on monday. inland areas in the south bay won't notice much of a change but everyone warms up to the middle of the week.

food or money. but the family donates to the food banks and unisef. he got volunteers from a local church to help construct the house. but his plans have come to a screaming halt. >> i got a citation in the mail. >> according to it he is violation of two city codes. improper use of land and the temporary haunted house was built without a permit. >> for two months they have been assembling this haunted house which is situated between two different residences but following receipt of this citation from the city, they have been ordered to take it down in six days. they are hoping for a reprieve. >> i hope to keep it here. we've done so much. we have hundreds of people, but if not maybe someone could donate space where we could put

a judge in oakland has found taco bell is not doing enough to accommodate people with disabilities.

it came out of a tackle oh bell in san pablo. they say they have not done enough at 220 establishments for people who use wheelchairs. barriers at the serving line was one of complaints. >> there what was no signage for parking. bathrooms were not could my yant tables didn't have places important people to sit. doors did not meet compliance requirements. >> tackle oh bell spokesperson did not want to comment about the case. judge's order is on hold while they consider the request to limit the injunction. >> some companies offer a lifetime warranty they mean it. a lass-e boy dealer went out of their way for an easy chair. >> jerry had a chair he loved and used for 11 jeers. after all that time all that

use finally stopped working as it was supposed to. >> it swiveled and slide. the mechanism broke. >> so he contacted his dealer. here it is in south san francisco. the chair was so nice even after 11 years he decided to have the mechanism repaired. >> i went to laz-e boy and they said no y lifetime zblarnt but it furnishes out the company no longer made the parts no parts means new chair. it was a lifetime guarantee after all. jerry needed his original paperwork, he knew he had it but where? no sweat. local dealer actually keeps receipts. it had his receipts for more than a decade back. they sent it in headquarters for jerry. but then things stalled.
